Laser Skin Resurfacing
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is an advanced facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a laser to improve the skin’s appearance. It is a highly effective treatment which tightens skin, evens out discolouration, removes fine lines and wrinkles, repairs sun damage and smooths out rough skin. It is also used to treat medical conditions such as scarring, acne scars and hyper-pigmentation. Laser skin resurfacing can treat the whole face, or more specific areas such as around the eyes and mouth. In addition to the face, areas such as the chest, neck, hands and arms can also be treated.
There are 2 types of laser skin resurfacing:
Ablative laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective aesthetic procedures for improving ageing skin. The procedure delivers an intense wavelength of light to the skin which removes the outer layer (epidermis) of aged or sun damaged skin. The laser stimulates the underlying skin which results in the growth of new collagen fibers and an improvement in wrinkles. Once the skin has healed following the procedure, new skin forms which is tighter and smoother.
Ablative laser resurfacing effectively treats the following conditions:
- Uneven skin tone
- Fine to moderate wrinkles
- Sun damaged skin
- Age spots
- Acne or chickenpox scars
Non-ablative lasers deliver a precise wavelength of light to produce a controlled injury to the skin which promotes cellular renewal. It is less invasive compared to ablative laser therapy as the energy that is emitted from the laser heats the lower layers of the skin in a controlled manner. The heat induced damage triggers a skin repair response and stimulates the production of collagen, which in turn promotes skin elasticity and firmness. Unlike ablative laser therapy, there is no damage caused to the surface of the skin, resulting in a quicker recovery time; however, it is less effective and will require significantly more treatments.
When should I undergo laser skin resurfacing?
As with all laser treatments, your skin will experience increased sensitivity to UV light, and so it is best to undergo laser skin resurfacing during the autumn or winter months when there is less chance of sun exposure due to shorter daytime hours and cloudy weather. Regardless of the time of year you choose to have your procedure, it is important to always protect your skin with a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen with a 5* rating. Not only will this help keep your results looking their best, it will also protect you against skin cancer and premature ageing.
What results can I expect?
Results from laser skin resurfacing are both immediate and progressive. Your skin will feel softer and smoother fairly soon after the treatment, and will look brighter with a more even tone. Further improvements will be seen over the next 3 – 6 months as the deeper layers of skin continue to produce new collagen. Ablative laser resurfacing will require fewer treatments and will last for several years, but it will have a longer recovery period of generally 2 -3 weeks. Non-ablative treatments will require several sessions in order to see the best results.
Are there any side-effects to laser skin resurfacing?
As non-ablative laser resurfacing is less invasive to ablative laser procedures, there are fewer unwanted effects. The following risks are more likely to be seen with ablative skin resurfacing, although they are still fairly uncommon:
- Burns or other injuries from the laser’s heat
- Changes in the skin’s pigmentation, including areas of lighter or darker skin
- Reactivating cold sores
- Bacterial infection
