Dermatology
Dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals with conditions and diseases of the skin, hair and nails, with procedures carried out for both medical and cosmetic purposes. A Dermatologist is a specialist doctor who manages a range of conditions of the skin, including:
- Skin cancer
- Acne
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Skin rashes
The skin is the largest organ of the body as it covers the entire surface area visible to the naked eye. This gives Dermatologists the advantage of direct visual examination without the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures such as laparoscopy.
Skin conditions and diseases are extremely common, with approximately 13 million patients visiting their GP each year, seeking a diagnosis for a concern they have relating to a skin condition, resulting in referrals from primary to secondary care increasing year on year. As such, Dermatologists see a wide range of patients from all walks of life.
With over 2,000 known skin diseases, approximately 20 of these diseases account for 90% of cases seen. The most common conditions are inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis, along with severe acne in teenagers.
Skin cancer diagnoses continue to rise faster than any other cancer in the UK with statistics indicating cases are doubling every 20 – 30 years. The deadliest form of skin cancer is Melanoma, and more than 12,000 cases of the disease are diagnosed in the UK every year, resulting in over 2,000.
Dermatologists are at the forefront of both research and treatment of skin cancer, with many now spending a significant part of their time operating surgically to remove benign and malignant tumours.
