Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical aesthetic procedure which exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells.  It is an extremely popular skincare treatment as not only are results instant, there is also no recovery time, which means treatments can be fitted into your daily routine without the need for taking time off work.  Microdermabrasion is an excellent introductory treatment to the world of advanced skincare solutions, or can be used as an add-on to other treatments such as laser skin resurfacing.

How does Microdermabrasion work?

A Microdermabrasion machine buffs and polishes the skin by spraying or rubbing fine crystals onto the skin with a wand that gently exfoliates the surface, removing the top layer.  The procedure takes approximately 30 – 40 minutes for the face, and 20 minutes for the neck.  The aim of the procedure is to make the skin appear more youthful.  Microdermabrasion is primarily used to rejuvenate the complexion of the face and neck, but it can be performed on any area of the skin.

What conditions can Microdermabrasion treat?

The aim of Microdermabrasion is to produce a smoother, brighter complexion with a more even tone.  It is most commonly used to treat the following:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Age spots
  • Dull complexion
  • Melasma (dark spots or patches on the skin)
  • Scars
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne prone skin
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Hyper-pigmentation

What results can I expect?

Your skin will immediately feel softer and smoother after your first treatment, but before seeing reduced signs of ageing, a person may require between 5 – 15 treatments.  People can undergo Microdermabrasion either weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending on their skin type and reason for treatment.  Results are temporary and ongoing treatments will be required to maintain your skin’s appearance.

Are there any side-effects to Microdermabrasion?

Side-effects to Microdermabrasion are minimal, but to reduce your risk, always use sun protection with a minimum SPF 30 after your procedure.  For a few days after Microdermabrasion, you may experience the following:

  • Bruising
  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
  • Redness of the skin, similar to sunburn
  • Swelling of the skin
  • A burning of stinging sensation

Microdermabrasion may not be suitable for people who scar easily or are prone to cold sore breakouts.
