Audiovestibular medicine

Audiovestibular medicine focuses on improving the quality of life of people of all ages who have hearing and balance disorders. This is achieved through the investigation, diagnosis and management of disorders such as hearing loss, tinnitus, hyperacusis, (sound sensitivity / noise sensitivity), dizziness and vertigo.

It is a different medical specialty to audiology and ENT, although there is some overlap. They work with audiologists who provide the testing and ENT who would perform surgical solutions. Their skill is through careful history taking and analysis of test results to provide a specialist assessment of the problem and discuss all different solutions for management.

Some audiovestibular physicians also have additional specialist training in paediatrics, neurology or ENT.

The specialist audiovestibular physicians offer:

  • Assessment if a child’s hearing/listening is because of hearing loss or other problems
  • Assessment of a child’s dizziness or balance problems
  • Aetiological investigations for hearing loss (why a hearing loss occurred)
  • Otoacoustic emission assessment (specialist inner ear response testing)
  • BPPV treatment / Epley manoeuvre / Hallpike test
  • Diagnostics for hearing loss
  • Earwax syringing in children (Bionix) or micro-suction
  • Spatialised auditory function and speech-in-noise assessment (LiSN-S)
