Dr Protima Deb

MB BS BSc MRCPCH PHD

Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Gastroenterology and General Paediatrics

Dr Protima Deb is a consultant specialist in paediatric gastroenterology. Her current NHS post is at The Royal London Hospital, Barts NHS Trust. She completed her medical degree at Imperial College and graduated in 2002. Her early paediatric training was at Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London, where she achieved Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics in 2006. She was appointed to the Higher Specialist Training Programme in Paediatric Gastroenterology in The London Deanery and completed her specialist training in 2014. After this, she pursued her academic interests and was awarded a doctoral degree from Queen Mary University of London in 2019. She was appointed as a consultant during her PhD and has been working as a consultant paediatric gastroenterologist since 2016.

Research is still very much part of her clinical work as an NHS consultant. As well as her substantive consultant role in the NHS, she holds an honorary senior clinical lectureship at Queen Mary University. Her specialist field of interest is exploring the gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Deb is a self-confessed research enthusiast, and she balances her clinical and academic duties in addition to giving lectures about her work at national and international conferences.

She is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition as well as a member of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

She considers working with children and their families a privilege and her approach to delivering care is a holistic one that is consultant-led and child-focused.
