One Ashford Hospital – Specialists in Musculoskeletal Conditions and Treatments

Sadly, for the 10 million people in the UK suffering with Arthritis, we haven’t yet found a solution to entirely prevent the onset, but you can look at lifestyle changes to help your joints and manage pain.

Exercise

Whilst the very thought of exercise may bring on joint pain, physical activity is vital in managing arthritis. The resulting increased muscle strength can improve mobility and reduce pain. Find an exercise you enjoy that’s low impact such as swimming or walking.

Do chat to your GP, Physiotherapist or Consultant before exercising with arthritis as they can help guide you on what exercise will be best for you.

Weight

Carrying excess weight can play a significant role in the level of pain you experience when suffering with lower limb arthritis. Reducing your weight can relieve pressure on the joints as well as bring about a multitude of other health benefits. Results of one study found that each pound of weight lost will result in a 4-fold reduction in pressure on your knees.

Food

It seems to be the answer for everything today, but what you eat plays an important role in the management of arthritis. Foods that are anti-inflammatory such as fruits and vegetables, yoghurt, fresh fish, and healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts are advised to be great for a healthy body. Monitoring the amount of red meat and dairy is also important as these can exacerbate the condition.

Alcohol

It’s likely that as part of the management of your arthritis you are taking some pain-killers or anti-inflammatory drugs. These do not mix well with alcohol and can cause some very unpleasant side effects. Do speak to your GP about how alcohol can affect your personal circumstances.

Stress

It can be very stressful dealing with the limitations and pain that arthritis brings about but stress itself can also negatively impact upon your condition. Speak to your healthcare specialist in order to understand how you can reduce your stress with exercise, pain management and getting plenty of fresh air and sleep.

At One Ashford Hospital we see a number of patients in our physiotherapy department every day who are suffering from arthritis. Our team of physios are helping people move better and reduce their pain, improving their quality of life. Sometimes surgical intervention is required, and our specialist Consultants regularly see people whose arthritis has reached a point where further options need to be considered.
