What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and causes parts of the brain to become damaged over many years.

Most people with Parkinson’s can begin to develop symptoms when they are over 50 years old, although some people with the condition can start to experience symptoms when they are under 40.

Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease signs and symptoms vary from person to person and can initially be mild or go unnoticed in some cases.

Some of the main symptoms include:

• Slow, delayed movement
• Involuntary shaking of parts on the body (tremor)

Somebody with Parkinson’s disease can also experience a wide range of additional psychological and physical symptoms.

Diagnosis

There is no specific test that can conclusively show or diagnose Parkinson’s disease.

A medical professional will usually conclude a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease using three main identifying factors.

These factors include:

• Symptoms
• An in-depth assessment of medical history
• A detailed physical examination

In the early stages, it may be difficult to say whether you definitely have the condition considering symptoms are often initially mild.

If you are suspected to have Parkinson’s disease, you will be referred to a specialist for further assessment, usually a neurologist or a geriatrician.

Treatment options

Although there is currently no proven cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are some treatment options available to help relieve and manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.

Treatment options include:

• Supportive therapies, such as physiotherapy
• Surgery in some cases
• Medication
