Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the sensation of noise in the ears. You may experience sounds like ringing, whooshing, humming or buzzing in one or both ears and it could be continual or intermittent. Tinnitus is often a symptom of another condition so it is important to speak to a specialist

Who does it Affect?

Tinnitus is not uncommon, affecting about 30% of people at some point in their lives. It can be seen in all age groups but it more prevalent in later life as it is common in (but not exclusive to) people who have other hearing problems. The severity varies from being a minor irritation to having a significant impact on the quality of everyday life.

What Causes Tinnitus?

It is important to understand that it is not a disease or an illness itself, but a symptom that can be triggered by a variety of different health conditions.

Potential causes include hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, stress and anxiety, ear infections, ear wax build-up, Ménière’s Disease, glue ear, otosclerosis, perforated eardrum and medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders or multiple sclerosis.

Fortunately, tinnitus is rarely an indication of a serious disorder and a specialist will be able to check this for you.

What Treatments are Available?

There’s no single treatment that works for everyone. However, if an underlying cause can be found, treating that may improve your symptoms. If a specific cause can’t be found, treatment will focus on helping you manage the condition on a daily basis. This may involve sound therapy (listening to neutral sounds to distract you from the sound of tinnitus), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) to help retrain the way your brain responds to the condition so you start to tune the sound out and become less aware of it.
