The septum is the soft part in the centre of your nose that divides your two nostrils. The septum can become deviated (bent) through damage, often causing the symptoms of a blocked nose. The septoplasty procedure is a surgical procedure to straighten the deviated septum and relieve the symptoms of a blocked nose.
Your doctor will recommend surgery to fix a deviated septum as it is the only reliable way to alleviate the associated symptoms. Your septum cannot be safely straightened without surgery. The septoplasty procedure is a surgical operation that takes roughly 45 minutes to perform. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic but local anaesthetic can be used. During the operation your surgeon will cut into your nose and remove any parts of the cartilage that are bent. Your surgeon will then straighten the remaining cartilage and close your nose back up.
Patients who undergo the septoplasty procedure should be able to return home the same day. If you have had non-dissolvable padding applied to your nose as part of the operation, an overnight stay will be required. Patients are usually able to return to work after 2 weeks.
Regular exercise should help you recover as quickly as possible. Before beginning a course of exercise consult your medical team for advice.
