PRP Injections

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP injections are a relatively new technique to treat damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscle and bone by stimulating the natural healing process with your own blood.

Your blood is drawn and then treated to separate the healing platelet rich plasma. The plasma is injected back into the affected area to stimulate cell repair and trigger the healing process. The stimulated healing relieves pain, reduces inflammation and improves joint function, enabling the patient able to quickly recover and return to normal activities.

PRP injections can be used to many sports injuries, degenerative conditions and other joint pain. If conservative treatments such as pain medication and physiotherapy haven’t improved symptoms, PRP injections may be an option for you. It is suitable for any age group.

The Procedure

Your surgeon will take a blood sample from you and place into a machine that spins the blood and separates the healing platelets. These platelets are the cells that help our blood to clot and contain proteins called ‘growth factors’. Your consultant will numb the area being treated. Then, using ultrasound as a guide, your consultant will inject the blood plasma that contains the concentration of the healing platelets into the affected area to stimulate cell repair and trigger the healing process.

The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes.

After the Procedure

You will be able to return home shortly after the procedure.

The injection site might be tender after the treatment but normally is not too painful. You can take pain medication if needed, but not anti-inflammatory medication. Using ice packs can help reduce swelling and reduce pain.

It is advisable to rest for 3 – 4 days following the procedure to maximise results.  You should be able to return to driving and work (as long it is not manual work) after a week but you will need to avoid strenuous exercise for 3 – 4 weeks.
