Oophorectomy (Ovary removal) (Laparoscopic)
An oophorectomy is a surgical operation to remove one or both of your ovaries. Your doctor is likely to recommend an oophorectomy if you have developed an ovarian cyst.
An ovarian cyst is often associated with pain, bloating, pressure on the bowel or bladder, and abnormal tiredness. The oophorectomy procedure should dramatically improve these symptoms.
Some women are at high risk of ovarian cancer due to heritage of the condition in family medical history. In such cases, the oophorectomy procedure should remove the risk of developing ovarian cancer.
The procedure might also be used to treat twisted ovaries or endometriosis.
If you have not yet gone through menopause, small ovarian cysts can usually be left to resolve themselves on their own.
The oophorectomy (ovary removal) procedure is a surgical operation that takes roughly 30 minutes and is usually performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will cut into your abdomen and insert a medical telescope. This will allow your surgeon to separate your ovary and remove it.
Patients who undergo the oophorectomy procedure should be able to return home on the same day. You should be able to return to normal activities after two days.
Regular exercise will help you recover as fast as possible. Before beginning a course of exercise consult your medical team for advice.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Gynaecology surgeon, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. Oophorectomy (ovary removal) treatment is available at the One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire and the One Ashford Hospital in Kent.
