A diagnostic laparoscopy is a surgical operation designed to help your doctor in diagnosing an issue with your abdominal or pelvic organs. For some women, minor treatment may be performed at the same time as the laparoscopy. The diagnostic laparoscopy procedure is one of the most effective ways for your doctor to find the cause of lower abdominal and pelvic pain. It is also used to aid the diagnosis of certain period and infertility problems.
If your doctor has recommended the laparoscopy for gynaecological reasons it is likely being used to aid the diagnosis of endometriosis, pelvic infection, adhesions, damaged fallopian tubes, an ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, or fibroids.
The diagnostic laparoscopy procedure is a surgical operation that usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes to perform. It is usually conducted under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will cut into your abdomen and insert a laparoscope (surgical telescope) so that the pelvic and abdominal organs can be viewed.
Patients who undergo the procedure should be able to return home on the same day or the day after. After the procedure, your medical team will inform you about what was found and make a recommendation for further treatment. You should be able to return to normal activities after 2 days.
Regular exercise will help you return to normal activities as quickly as possible. Before beginning a course of exercise consult your medical team for advice.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Gynaecology surgeon, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. Diagnostic private laparoscopy is available at One Ashford Hospital in Kent and One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire.
