Haemorrhoids – Injection or Banding
Haemorrhoids are small fleshy lumps that sometimes develop around the rectum, commonly known as ‘piles’. They can cause pain or itching and are often associated with bleeding while passing a bowel movement. When large they can pass through the anus and will feel like a lump when you clean yourself.
If your haemorrhoids are not too large, your doctor may recommend an injection or banding procedure to reduce their size. Injection or banding are means of shrinking haemorrhoids.
Before deciding whether to use injection or banding your surgeon will carefully examine your rectum using either a flexible or rigid telescope.
If an injection is required your surgeon will inject a chemical called phenol into the lining of the rectum above the haemorrhoid.
If banding is required your surgeon will pass a device through the telescope and place a band of silicon onto the lining of the anal canal. The band should block the supply of blood to the area and cause the haemorrhoid to shrink.
You should be able to return home on the same day as the procedure and return to work the following day. Haemorrhoids may return after undergoing the procedure, you can reduce the risk by maintaining a high fibre diet and drinking plenty of fluid.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Colorectal surgeon, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. Haemorrhoid injections and haemorrhoid banding is available at the One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire and the One Ashford Hospital in Kent.
