Grommet Insertion (adult)
Grommet insertion is a surgical procedure to alleviate the symptoms of glue ear. Glue ear is a common condition where fluid builds up behind the ear drum in an area called the middle ear. It can cause deafness and earache or infection and is often associated with a discharge from the ear.
A grommet (small plastic or metal tube) is inserted into the ear to allow air to pass to the middle ear, preventing the build up of fluid.
Glue ear will almost always resolve itself without the need for surgical intervention, however, your doctor may recommend surgery if the condition last longer than three months or generates infection.
The grommet insertion procedure is a surgical operation which takes roughly 20 minutes to perform. Your surgeon will make a cut in your eardrum and remove any fluid there using suction (myringotomy). They will place a plastic or metal grommet in the hole.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. Grommet insertion is available at the One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire and the One Ashford Hospital in Kent.
You can use your private medical insurance or pay for your Grommet Insertion (adult) treatment. We offer competitive, fixed price packages as well as the ability to spread your cost with the option of 0% finance. If you are using your health insurance please do contact your insurer first for approval and let them know you’d like to be treated at either the One Ashford Hospital or One Hatfield Hospital.
