A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to aid your doctor in working out the cause of a problem in your bowel (colon). The procedure involves inserting a flexible telescope into the bowel through the rectum. If a polyp is found to be the cause of any discomfort, your surgeon may be able to remove it whilst you are undergoing the flexible sigmoidoscopy.
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that takes around 30 to 45 minutes to perform. If appropriate, your doctor may give you a sedative or painkiller before you undergo the procedure. The telescope will be inserted into your colon and air will be blown into the bowel to ensure your surgeon can see what they are looking for.
If your doctor gives you a sedative before undergoing the procedure you should recover fully within about two hours. You may experience the feeling of being bloated after the procedure, though this will also pass relatively quickly. You should be able to return to work the next day unless otherwise advised.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Gastroenterology consultant, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. The flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure is available at the One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire and the One Ashford Hospital in Kent.
You can use your private medical insurance or pay for your Flexible Sigmoidoscopy treatment. We offer competitive, fixed price packages as well as the ability to spread your cost with the option of 0% finance. If you are using your health insurance please do contact your insurer first for approval and let them know you’d like to be treated at either the One Ashford Hospital or One Hatfield Hospital.
