Colposcopy and LLETZ
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows your doctor to examine your cervix (the neck of your womb). For some women, undergoing the colposcopy will give your doctor enough information to treat you at the same time. Your doctor will usually recommend a colposcopy if a smear test has suggested a problem with the cells in your cervix.
If the cells in your cervix are abnormal a colposcopy is the only method available to diagnose the problem and how serious it might be.
The colposcopy procedure will usually take your doctor between 10 and 20 minutes to perform. Your gynaecologist may need to perform a biopsy (removal of cervical tissue) as you undergo the colposcopy to help with diagnosis.
If your doctor decides to begin treatment at the same time as the colposcopy, a LLETZ procedure us usually performed. The LLETZ procedure is minor surgical operation, the letters stand for large loop excision of the transformation zone.
Other treatments that may be required after a colposcopy include laser treatment, freezing (cryocautery), and using heat (cold coagulation).
After undergoing the colposcopy your medical team will inform you of what was found and will advise you on further treatment. You should be able to return home on the same day and be able to return to normal activities the following day.
Regular exercise will help you recover as quickly as possible. Before beginning a course of exercise consult your medical team for advice.
At One Healthcare we can book you in to see a specialist Gynaecology consultant, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation. The colposcopy and LLETZ procedures are available at the One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire and the One Ashford Hospital in Kent.
You can use your private medical insurance or pay for your Colposcopy and LLETZ treatment. We offer competitive, fixed price packages as well as the ability to spread your cost with the option of 0% finance. If you are using your health insurance please do contact your insurer first for approval and let them know you’d like to be treated at either the One Ashford Hospital or One Hatfield Hospital.
