One Hatfield nominated for Green Apple Award

One Hatfield Hospital Recognised for Environmental Excellence at its Core

One Hatfield Hospital has been nominated for a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice, recognising its commitment to sustainability.

The £40m BREEAM Excellent One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire, built by our construction partners Conlon Construction, has energy efficiency and environmental performance built into is fabric, with multiple measures to reduce consumption and utilise renewable technologies driving down running costs whilst ensuring high standards of patient comfort.

The hospital is insulated beyond mandatory building requirements, having been specified with BRE Green Guide A+ rated materials to support long-term sustainability and a rigorous focus placed on air tightness helping to minimise heat loss.

A robust energy strategy also includes LED lighting controlled by a DALI-based system, complete with absence detection, to ensure it is only in operation on an as-needed basis. Other features include photovoltaics for optimum electrical generation and rainwater harvesting.

Incoming mains water is also treated with UV and carbon filtering to safeguard against waterborne infections and bacteria, as well as no-touch taps installed throughout the facility aiding infection control.

Organised by The Green Organisation, the Green Apple Awards recognise and reward projects with significant environmental merit. Conlon Construction will find out whether One Hatfield Hospital received a Gold, Silver or Bronze prize during a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on Monday 12 November.

Sean Conlon, operations manager for Conlon Construction, said: “Achieving the right energy efficiency and environmental standards to reach BREEAM Excellent is notoriously difficult in healthcare, because of the hospital’s 24/7 operation, excessive water usage and extensive heating and cooling requirements.

“As our second new build for One Healthcare, this scheme raised by the bar for hospital construction. Whilst it may only be a small site compared to other NHS Trust hospitals, the elements within can be shared and scaled to benefit any healthcare environment.

“Credit for this Green Apple Award goes to the entire Hatfield project team who fostered a culture of sustainability from day one, and we’re looking forward to receiving the prize later this year.”

CEO of One Healthcare, Adrian Stevensen comments: “An important aspiration for One Healthcare has been to achieve BREEAM Excellent at both One Ashford and One Hatfield hospitals. We have collaborated with Conlon Construction to create amazing spaces, with a focus on sustainability from design through to fit out and beyond. This contributes towards creating an exceptional environment for our patients as well as efficient maintenance and upkeep of our facilities, reducing operational cost and adding value for our investors.”
