Breast Reduction Questions Answered by Mr Marcus Davis

Mr Davis has vast experience in all areas of facial, breast and body cosmetic surgery. He prides himself in working with patients to achieve the very best natural looking results.

We caught up with Mr Davis to find out the answers to the questions you need to know if considering a Breast Reduction.

Who is suitable for this kind of surgery?

Ladies who have breasts they feel are too large and want smaller. Those whose breasts are causing back and neck pain, their bra straps are cutting in to their shoulders, who get infections of the skin under the breast and on the abdomen, and those in whom they feel the breast size interferes with the ability to exercise and who have trouble getting bras and clothes to fit.

What results can they expect to achieve?

Smaller, lighter and more pert breasts, although they are likely to have scars around their nipples, straight down from the nipples to the breast crease and in the breast crease – these nearly all fade well with time.

How long will they stay in Hospital?

Breast reduction can most often be done as a day case procedure (home the same day), however occasionally people stay one night, especially if surgery is late in the day or they are travelling far to get home.

How long is the recovery?

Expect to be off work for up to two weeks and to not be performing any vigorous exercise for at least four weeks. It can take three months, sometimes more, for all the swelling to go down, and up to 12-18 months for the scars to completely fade.

What is the consultation process?

You would come for a consultation with me lasting roughly 40 minutes during which time we will discuss your medical history in depth, your goals/aims for your breasts, after which I will examine your breasts and discuss the options available and the results I think we can achieve We will discuss the operation, what it involves, the risks and recovery process in more depth. Photos will be taken for your medical records (with your permission). If you wish to see me for a second time, then that can be arranged. You will then go away and think about things and decide if you wish to proceed. I encourage patients to seek a second opinion and, providing that they are suitable for an operation and in agreement with the surgeon about this, to book with the surgeon that they ‘click’ with and trust/feel comfortable with and feel can achieve the results sought for them.

Is there anything they need to do before surgery?

Before surgery I would urge patients to read through information leaflets about their chosen surgery and come back to see me if they have any questions/uncertainties that need answering/addressing. I also ask that smoking is stopped at least one month before surgery, that alcohol is avoided for a week before surgery. Patients are asked to shower the morning of surgery and to bring/wear comfortable, loose fitting and easily put-on clothes so as to be comfortable after surgery.

Is there anything else that would help get maximum results?

Follow advice regarding showering, wound care, exercise etc. after surgery. Avoid smoking and alcohol for a period of time after surgery.
