Understanding Autism: Caring for Children and Families Together

Understanding Autism: Caring for Children and Families Together

Autism is more than a diagnosis. For children and their families, it can be a world that feels confusing, overwhelming, and at times, isolating. At One Hatfield Hospital, we want to acknowledge that journey this Autism Awareness Month and highlight the ways we provide calm, supportive care for every child and family.

Life Beyond the Diagnosis

Every child on the spectrum experiences the world differently. Alongside the unique strengths they bring, families may encounter additional health challenges, such as:

  • Sleep or neurological concerns
  • Urological or bladder issues
  • Musculoskeletal or orthopaedic challenges
  • Skin conditions or dermatological concerns
  • Gastrointestinal difficulties
  • Diabetes or endocrine-related issues
  • General health and developmental monitoring

We understand that navigating these concerns can feel daunting—and that children need a safe, patient, and reassuring environment to explore their health.

A Collaborative, Child-Centred Approach

At One Hatfield Hospital, we believe that your visit is for both you and your child. You know your child best, which means every consultation is a collaborative process. Our paediatric teams work alongside you to understand your child’s needs, answer questions, and develop a care plan that supports their wellbeing holistically.

We have several consultants working with us that offer formal autism and ADHD assessments, and their profiles can be viewed on our website here: Autism – One Healthcare along with some helpful information on signs and the diagnosis journey.

Alongside this we also provide a comprehensive paediatric service where children feel comfortable and families feel heard, including:

  • General Paediatrics – Holistic care for growth, development, and routine check-ups
  • Paediatric Neurology – Sensitive support for neurological concerns
  • Paediatric Urology – Family-focused care for urinary and bladder issues
  • Paediatric Rheumatology – Expert management of musculoskeletal challenges
  • Children’s Orthopaedics – Supporting bone, joint, and posture concerns
  • Paediatric Dermatology – Gentle care for skin conditions
  • Paediatric Gastroenterology – Helping children with digestive issues
  • Paediatric Diabetes & Endocrinology – Managing metabolic and hormonal health

All of our staff have completed Oliver McGowan training, ensuring we are equipped to support neurodivergent children and their families in the best way possible. Our teams are trained to create a calm, welcoming environment where children can express their symptoms and parents can share insight into what their child needs. Together, we aim to make every appointment a positive, reassuring experience for the whole family.

You Are Not Alone

Autism Awareness Month reminds us that families navigating neurodivergence deserve understanding, empathy, and support. At One Hatfield Hospital, we are committed to being a safe, collaborative space for children and families—helping them navigate health concerns with patience, compassion, and expertise.

We also recognise that families may seek additional guidance and support outside of healthcare settings. SNAP (Special Needs and Parents) is a highly respected charity providing advice, practical resources, and community support to families of neurodivergent children.
