Every year, International Nurses Day gives us an important opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate the dedication, compassion, and skill of nurses across the world. This year, we were proud to mark the occasion by recognising not only our nurses, but all of our clinical staff who work tirelessly to provide outstanding care every single day.
The History of International Nurses Day
International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on 12th May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Her pioneering work during the Crimean War revolutionised patient care and set the standards for hygiene, professionalism, and compassion that continue to guide nursing today.
The day was officially recognised in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses and has since become a global celebration of the invaluable contribution nurses make to healthcare systems around the world. It is a time to recognise their expertise, resilience, and the vital role they play in improving patient outcomes and experiences.
Celebrating All Clinical Staff
While International Nurses Day is dedicated to nurses, we believe it is equally important to acknowledge the wider clinical team. From healthcare assistants to specialist clinicians, therapists to support staff, it takes a collective effort to deliver the high standards of care our patients deserve.
Every member of our clinical team plays a crucial role—often behind the scenes, often without recognition, but always with professionalism, empathy, and commitment. Together, they form the backbone of our organisation, ensuring every patient feels safe, supported, and cared for.
How We Celebrated the Day
We wanted this year’s celebration to feel meaningful, uplifting, and reflective of the incredible work our teams do. Throughout the day, we focused on creating moments of joy, appreciation, and connection across the hospital.
Sweet Treats for Staff
We shared a selection of sweet treats, including a stop from an ice cream van, across departments as a small token of our appreciation—because every celebration deserves something delicious!
Spreading Joy with a Kindness Jar
Our kindness jar featured messages of affirmation and small acts of kindness, giving staff the chance to pause, reflect, and share a little positivity with one another throughout the day.
A Gratitude Wall
The gratitude wall quickly filled with messages of thanks—from staff to fellow colleagues. It became a powerful visual reminder of the difference our clinical teams make every day.
New Clinical Artwork Around the Hospital
We unveiled new artwork across clinical areas, helping to create a welcoming and uplifting environment for both staff and patients. These visual touches serve as a daily reminder of the care and compassion at the heart of what we do.
Celebrating the Legacy of Nurses
Throughout the hospital, we displayed fascinating facts about historical nurses and pioneers in healthcare. These stories not only honoured their legacy but also inspired both staff and patients with the incredible history behind modern care.
What Our Patients Say
We truly value all feedback shared by our patients, as it helps us continue to learn, grow, and recognise the exceptional care provided by our teams. It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the individuals who make such a positive difference every day.
We’re proud to share some of the wonderful feedback we receive about our clinical staff—kind words that highlight their compassion, professionalism, and dedication to delivering outstanding care:
“The staff, especially the nurse and radiographer were incredibly professional and warm and made a very difficult experience (recurrent miscarriages) really quite a positive experience. I never leave reviews but felt it important to recognise them. Thank you.”
“The staff were all very nice, friendly and helpful. The doctor and nurse who carried out my procedure were exceptional, they made me feel at ease and comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. They were highly professional throughout and made sure I knew exactly what was going on before during and after.”
“The nurses that did the pre op appointment were really friendly, very helpful, and understanding”
“The nurse was very professional and made me feel reassured, answered all my questions in a friendly manner. I went away feeling happy.”
