Understanding Needle Phobia: Why Compassion Matters

Needle phobia, or trypanophobia, is a common and often deeply distressing fear of needles that affects both adults and children. For some, the anxiety is mild; for others, it can cause extreme distress and lead to the avoidance of vital medical procedures such as blood tests or vaccinations.

At One Ashford Hospital, we believe this fear should never be dismissed. Compassion, time and the right support can make all the difference.

Our dedicated phlebotomist, Margaret Wooden, is highly experienced in working with patients who are nervous or needle-phobic. She takes extra time to ensure patients feel at ease and uses gentle, reassuring techniques to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

For our paediatric patients, specialist support is provided by Helen Petulla and Evonne Newman, who are both exceptional in managing young patients with kindness and patience. Their ability to build trust and use age-appropriate coping strategies is a key part of helping children face their fears in a safe and supportive environment.

We also allow for longer appointment times for those who need it and teach helpful techniques – such as breathing exercises, distraction strategies and guided reassurance – to help reduce anxiety before and during the procedure.

Needle phobia is real and it matters. With the right care and understanding, even the most anxious patient can feel safe and supported.

If you or your child are affected by needle phobia, please let us know when booking. We’re here to help.
