Consultant Gastroenterologist

Dr James Evans is a consultant Gastroenterologist at the Lister and New QEII Hospitals. He is the Upper GI Cancer and Endoscopy training lead.  He specialises in upper GI and lower GI gastroenterology and endoscopy including gastroenterology, colonoscopy, polypectomy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. His other interests include oesophageal and gastric cancer, Barrett’s oesophagus and upper GI physiology testing for reflux.

Dr Evans is a full-time consultant Gastroenterologist at the Lister and New QEII Hospitals. His specialist interests include reflux and heartburn, Barrett’s oesophagus, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, upper GI physiology testing, investigation of abnormal liver function tests and anaemia. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and is proficient in physiology testing for reflux and swallowing problems. 

 

He obtained a BSc in Neurosciences at Sussex University in 1998 and qualified from Leicester/Warwick Medical School in 2006 with a prize for Clinical medicine. He undertook his speciality training in Northwest London between 2012 and 2018 working at centres of excellence including St Marks, St Mary’s and Royal London Hospitals.  In 2015 Dr Evans received the Derek Butler Award and subsequently gained his PhD in 2018 from Queen Mary University of London for his research into the biology of Barrett’s oesophagus and its role in cancer development. He has produced publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented his work at a variety of national and international meetings. 

 

Dr Evans is closely involved in medical education and training; he is the Endoscopy training lead for his NHS Trust, teaches on regional JAG accredited endoscopy training courses, is a member of the Regional Upper GI Cancer Alliance and is the lead for the Regional Laser service for oesophageal cancer. 

 

He prides himself on giving an unhurried, patient centred consultation. He provides high quality, evidence-based care with appropriate investigations, treatments and advice that are tailored to each individual’s ideas, concerns and expectations.
