Gallbladder removal

Your gallbladder is a small organ in the upper right portion of your abdomen that stores bile. Bile is produced by your liver and helps break down the fatty food that we eat. If this bile becomes too concentrated gallstones can form in you gallbladder and may cause pain, nausea and jaundice.

You do not need your gallbladder so surgery is usually recommended to remove it should it cause you problems. This surgery (called a Cholecystectomy) is very common and is the most effective form of treatment for gallstones in the vast majority of cases.

Our Consultants can perform this surgery in two ways, laparoscopically (keyhole) or as open surgery, both under general anaesthetic. Whilst laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the more common procedure these days, your surgeon will discuss their recommended method with you depending on your individual circumstances.

At One Ashford Hospital, we can book you in to see a specialist General or Colorectal surgeon, usually within 48 hours, for an initial consultation.
