For many people, the thought of surgery arrives with a thundercloud of worry. Questions spiral. What will it feel like? Will it hurt? What if something goes wrong?
Yet sometimes, the stories that stay with us most are the ones where fear quietly transforms into confidence.
At One Ashford Hospital, we are privileged to support patients through every stage of their care journey, from those first nervous conversations to the moment they rediscover comfort, movement and independence. This patient’s experience with two thumb joint replacement procedures is a powerful reminder of how compassionate care and expert clinical teams can make all the difference.
A Patient Story in Their Own Words
In June 2025 I had my right thumb joint replaced under general anaesthetic with Mr Andrew Smith. I was so nervous and anxious and didn’t feel brave enough to be conscious whilst being operated on. I was so well taken care of and the operation was very successful. However, the recovery time was extended and I certainly felt groggy and not with it for 3 days after.
In November I returned to have my left thumb joint replaced. This time I was having a local instead. I have to be honest that I was even more anxious and scared this time around, knowing from previous experiences, that my blood pressure can severely fluctuate. I relayed my fears to the staff and I can honestly say that my fears were very soon eliminated. How superbly wonderful, caring, empathetic and understanding were all the staff.
Throughout the local administration, I was constantly reassured and cared for. My fears were allayed when the anaesthetist touched my arm and fingers and I couldn’t feel a thing, just that my arm felt like a lead weight that I didn’t even have control of, to the amusement of the staff.
The theatre was a relaxed vibe with music playing. Everyone chatting to each other. Yes, I have to admit that I didn’t want to see what they were doing, although I had every idea from the noises and their communication. It was very surreal hearing sawing, drilling, screwing and hammering but I literally could not feel a thing. The best bit was being aware of how amazing everyone was in the room. Their professionalism and expertise that we generally don’t get to witness. It’s just so reassuring to truly know for yourself just what great hands you’re in.
My recovery was literally immediate, just 3 checks on vitals, tea and cake and I was discharged.
The best feeling after is one of pure achievement, being brave and facing your fears, definitely is a confidence boost and I totally believe this positivity has aided an even more speedy recovery this time around.
It’s now 2 weeks later. I stopped taken pain relief 4 days after and kept to the minimum dosage. My bandage is already off, already doing exercises and the wound is healing superbly.
To anyone having doubts, please reconsider. This is far less risky and in my opinion the best option. Be brave and face your fears.
