Topping-out ceremony marks One Hatfield Hospital milestone

The new £40m One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire has reached a milestone in its construction with delivery partners gathering on site to celebrate its topping out on Thursday 29th June 2017.

Representatives from Conlon Construction, One Healthcare and Octopus Healthcare attended the ceremony at the two-storey, 47,000 sq ft building which will span four acres and is expected to open at the end of the year.

Commissioned by One Healthcare, designed by Manning Elliott and delivered by Conlon Construction, the new facility will comprise 21 beds, three of which will be designated for extended recovery. It will also feature three ultra clean ventilation (UCV) theatres, physiotherapy unit, 14 day-case pods, two treatment rooms, 10 outpatient consulting rooms, a high tech diagnostic imaging suite and ample parking.

The scheme is funded by Octopus Healthcare, a leading developer of innovative and purpose-designed healthcare premises. One Hatfield Hospital will be the second of its 10 facilities in the country and will be managed by a team, which over the years, has funded, developed and operated more than 50 private units (15% of the entire UK private hospitals), boasting in excess of 50 years’ experience.

Adrian Stevensen, chief executive of One Healthcare, said: “One Hatfield Hospital is the second state-of-the-art private hospital development from One Healthcare following the opening of Ashford Hospital last year, which was also delivered by Conlon and has since seen tremendous success. The topping out ceremony is the final landmark before the hospital’s completion and we can’t wait to open its doors and provide great private care for people of Hertfordshire and beyond.”

Michael Conlon from Conlon Construction, added: “We are excited to be involved with this project and are pleased to have reached such an important stage. The topping out marks the team’s achievements since starting on site and is a vital milestone to show that we’re on track and are swiftly moving towards completion in a few months’ time.”

‘Topping out’ is the term used by contractors to refer to the installation of the final piece of structure, or the completion of the roof on a building, bridge or other large construction. It signifies that the structure has reached its maximum height, rather than the project has reached completion. The significance of topping out is believed to date back to pre-Dark Age Scandinavia, where it became a celebration due to the fact that large numbers of the community would often assist with completing a new building, and as such it was a way that the building owner could show their appreciation.
