Urology refers to the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract. This includes the kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, urethra, reproductive organs and external urinary opening.
In males, urology also includes the male genital conditions such as erectile dysfunction, vasectomy (and vasectomy reversal) testicular cancer and surgery for benign scrotal lumps. Notably, male urology includes prostate cancer which is estimated to affect 14% of men at some point in their lifetime.
In women, urology can also comprise pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, interstitial cystitis (also known as painful bladder syndrome - PBS), and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Common Urological Conditions
The most common problems experienced are urinary tract infections, kidney stones and ureteral stones, enlarged prostate (also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - BPH) and an overactive bladder causing urinary incontinence. Patients suffering from these conditions often go for long periods of time without seeing their doctor - either because they are embarrassed, or because the symptoms are ascribed to growing old, or poor diet.
